Where It All Started

Rudolf Diesel, the father of diesel engines, built the first well-known prototype of the high-compression engine in 1897. Since then, through modifications and customizations, the diesel engine has enhanced to being one of the most dependable types of power for all types of vehicles

Now fast forward, years later in 1919, where Lyle Cummins improved the diesel engine to produce the world's finest engine. The very first engine Cummins created was for farm use, and it was mainly sold in the Sears Roebuck and Co. catalogue. After making diesel engines for trucks and buses, Cummins finally installed the first diesel-powered engine in a passenger car.

Dodge Ram and Cummins Partnership

In 1989, Dodge Ram adopted a 5.9 liter 6-cylinder 12v turbodiesel engine with an output of 160 horsepower and 400lb.-ft. of torque. And although other trucks like Chevy and Ford already had installed diesel engines at the time, nothing came close to Cummins diesel engine. With a direct-injected and turbocharged engine, Cummins was on a completely different lane.

However, as times changes, so did Cummins' diesel engine. Over the years, specific changes were made for better performance. These included:

  • 1991- An intercooler was integrated into the engine
  • 1994- The old injection pump was replaced with the Bosch P7100 which meant better manual transmission numbers
  • 1998- The P7100 was replaced with an electronically controlled rotary injection pump-- the VP44
  • 2001- The injection pump was replaced with the common-rail Bosch CP3 which allowed for multiple injection events that reduced engine noise
  • 2007- the 5.9L Cummins engine was redesigned where displacement was increased to 6.7 litres. This engine also came with a whole 350 horsepower at 650 lb.-ft of torque

The Cummins Engine Now

In 2019, Ram HD trucks redesigned the Cummins Diesel Engine pushing the limits of the turbocharged engine. Now the engine boasts of an impressive 1,000 lb-ft. And although the turbocharger's size grew, it is now capable of a 33 psi of boost. The engine is now 62 lbs lighter compared to previous models of the engine owing to the use of a compacted graphite iron engine block.
